To practise dentistry in the UK, you must register with the General Dental Council (GDC). The registration process varies depending on where you obtained your dental qualifications. Dentists who qualified within the UK can apply directly, while those with overseas qualifications may need to pass the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) or demonstrate equivalent credentials. Detailed information on the registration process is available on the GDC’s website.

The GDC is the regulatory body for dental professionals in the UK. Its responsibilities include maintaining a register of qualified dentists and dental care professionals, setting standards for dental education and practice, and taking action when professionals’ fitness to practise is in question.
UDA stands for Units of Dental Activity. In NHS practices, your contract will specify how many UDAs you’re expected to complete each year. Each treatment band carries a set number of UDAs, and your pay is typically linked to UDA performance.
Yes, demonstrating proficiency in English is mandatory. The GDC accepts various forms of evidence, including an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic certificate with a minimum average score of 7.0 and no single module lower than 6.5. Other acceptable evidence includes recent primary dental qualifications taught and examined in English or recent practice experience in a country where English is the first and native language.
Yes, all practising dentists in the UK are required to have appropriate professional indemnity insurance to cover any claims arising from their practice. This ensures protection for both the dentist and patients.
CPD refers to activities that maintain and enhance a dentist’s knowledge and skills. The GDC mandates that all registered dentists complete a specified number of CPD hours within a five-year cycle to ensure ongoing competence and high standards of care.
Dentists from the EEA with qualifications specified in the relevant EC Directive can register with the GDC based on those qualifications. However, following Brexit, there have been changes to the recognition process. It’s crucial to check the latest guidelines on the GDC’s website to understand current requirements

The ORE is an examination for overseas-qualified dentists to assess their knowledge and clinical skills, ensuring they meet UK standards. It consists of two parts: a written assessment and a practical examination. Candidates must meet specific criteria, including clinical experience and English language proficiency, to be eligible. More details can be found on the GDC’s website.
Yes, the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) is an alternative examination route. Additionally, dentists from the European Economic Area (EEA) may have different pathways based on mutual recognition agreements. It’s advisable to consult the GDC for guidance on the most appropriate route based on your qualifications.
We provide end-to-end support for all the documents required for your visa application and Certificate of Sponsorship (COS). You can rely on our team to ensure a smooth process.
In certain cases, dentists from specific countries or those with recognized qualifications may be exempt from the ORE. Additionally, some may be eligible for temporary registration for specific roles. It’s essential to consult the GDC to determine individual eligibility and the appropriate pathway.
