How do I register as a dentist in the UK?
To practise dentistry in the UK, you must register with the General Dental Council (GDC). The registration process varies depending on where you obtained your dental qualifications. Dentists who qualified within the UK can apply directly, while those with overseas qualifications may need to pass the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) or demonstrate equivalent credentials. How long does the recruitment process take?
The recruitment process generally takes a few weeks, depending on the completion of the necessary documentation and your GDC registration status. Our team will keep you updated throughout the process.
I’ve applied for my GDC registration. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can apply for the job if you have already applied for GDC registration. We are supportive of professionals working through the registration process and offer guidance during this phase. However, you can start practicing only after obtaining your GDC number.
What is the role of the General Dental Council (GDC)?
The GDC is the regulatory body for dental professionals in the UK. Its responsibilities include maintaining a register of qualified dentists and dental care professionals, setting standards for dental education and practice, and taking action when professionals’ fitness to practise is in question.
What are UDAs and how do they affect my work?
UDA stands for Units of Dental Activity. In NHS practices, your contract will specify how many UDAs you’re expected to complete each year. Each treatment band carries a set number of UDAs, and your pay is typically linked to UDA performance.
Is English language proficiency required for registration?
Yes, demonstrating proficiency in English is mandatory. The GDC accepts various forms of evidence, including an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic certificate with a minimum average score of 7.0 and no single module lower than 6.5. Other acceptable evidence includes recent primary dental qualifications taught and examined in English or recent practice experience in a country where English is the first and native language.
Do I need professional indemnity insurance to practice?
Yes, all practising dentists in the UK are required to have appropriate professional indemnity insurance to cover any claims arising from their practice. This ensures protection for both the dentist and patients.
What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and is it mandatory?
CPD refers to activities that maintain and enhance a dentist’s knowledge and skills. The GDC mandates that all registered dentists complete a specified number of CPD hours within a five-year cycle to ensure ongoing competence and high standards of care.
Are there specific requirements for dentists trained in the EEA?
Dentists from the EEA with qualifications specified in the relevant EC Directive can register with the GDC based on those qualifications. Yes, the LDS exam consists of multiple parts (typically Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3), and you must pass all parts to qualify for GDC registration and be eligible to work with Alliance Dental.
Who will guide me after getting the job offer?

Can I work in both private and NHS practices?
Yes, once you have obtained your GDC registration and NHS Performer Number, you can work in both private and NHS practices, subject to the terms of your employment.
How do I register with the GDC after passing the LDS?
To register with the GDC after passing the LDS, you need to submit the required documents, including proof of your LDS qualification, identification, and other relevant certifications, directly to the GDC.
How are associate dentists paid in the UK?
Associates are usually self-employed and earn a percentage of their gross treatment fees. This can vary depending on whether the role is NHS, private, or mixed, based on UDA rates for NHS.
What is the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE)?
The ORE is an examination for overseas-qualified dentists to assess their knowledge and clinical skills, ensuring they meet UK standards.
